Ending Stigma through Collaboration and Lifting All To Empowerment (ESCALATE)
NMAC – (The National Minority AIDS Council), in partnership with the University of Chicago, launched the ESCALATE program in 2020. Funded by a cooperative agreement with the Health Resources and Service Administration (HRSA), “ESCALATE” works to reduce the stigma against people with HIV at the individual, organizational, and systemic levels.
Three BRHPC staff Dr. Gritell Berkeley Martinez, Shawn Jackson-Tinsley, and Von Biggs, attended a five-day ESCALATE training in Miami, FL, August 14-19, to better inform the HIV Health Services Planning Council in its efforts to learn ways to reduce HIV stigma & discrimination, increase awareness, and address stigma throughout the Ryan White Part A System of Care.
HIV stigma is a primary contributor to health gaps and disparities around access to HIV treatment and prevention within communities of color. As such, the ESCALATE program teaches participants to recognize and address HIV stigma, focusing on transgender/gender non-conforming individuals, men who have sex with men, and the Black/African American community.
